This small residential project was completed at the Shinohara Studio of Tokyo Institute of Technology. Shinohara is a fascinating architect, primarily known for his residential works that closely integrate practice and theory. The development of his architectural theory is clearly defined and is divided by him into four stages. This residential project aims to explore the possibilities of designing a new type of residence from his perspective, following his fourth stage.
In this hillside residence design, Shinohara’s approach to integrating the house with its surroundings is adopted. Through the intrusion of natural elements, the building’s form establishes a subtle relationship with the slope. It seems as if the structure might roll down, yet it also appears to challenge the environment. This is particularly evident within the interior, where the slope and the building’s floor interweave and intersect, creating a powerful spiral connection. This residence is not designed for comfort but rather to demonstrate the extent to which architecture can be influenced by the environment and how strong the tension between them can be.
